Westwood Volunteer Opportunity List At Home Helpers - Anyone who can pick up work to complete at home: cutting, coloring, collating, typing, baking, sewing, tracing, etc. Book Fair - Volunteers are needed throughout the day to help students with selections, collect money, and re-shelve materials. The fall book fair is in conjunction with fall conference days, October 20-24. And the spring book fair is February 9-13. Cafeteria - Daily in the cafeteria from 11:2-am to 12:50pm, volunteers help students, clean tables and maintain salad bar. You can volunteer once a week as many days as you schedule allows, or be "on call". These volunteers must attend a one-hour Health Department training session, unless you already have a health card. The training will be held at the BA Education Service Center, Room 103, on Thursday, September 18th at 1:30pm or Thursday, October 9th at 9:30am. Each day you volunteer, you receive a FREE lunch and the school earns $7 for each hour. Career and Special Interest / Abilities Sharing - We are eager to have people willing to share about their careers, interests, abilities with our students. Please list any talents or resources you might be able to share: sign language, music, Indian or other ethnic art / culture, story-teller, writer, puppeteer, artist, foreign language, etc. Decorating - There is a PTA committee to plan decorations throughout the year for different activities like Red Ribbon Week, Teacher Appreciation, Grandperson's Day, however, there is still an additional need for volunteers to hang the decorations. Donuts with Dad / Muffins with Mom - Volunteers will be needed to come early and help set up and serve the treats and collect money for these days. This is tone in conjunction with the spring book fair. Drop off and Pick up Monitors - Each morning, 8:30am to 8:50am, to meet and greet students and assist in opening car doors as they arrive and each afternoon form 3:30pm to 3:50pm to help walk students to buses, cars, and escort walkers to the bicycle racks. This is perfect for those who already drop off and / or pick up kids - just come a little early and stay a little late. Fall Carnival - This opportunity 9is for those who can not be involved in the committee work of planning and implementing the carnival but would love to help. Opportunities begin at noon September 18th and continue throughout the carnival. Help will be needed with setup/take down, sorting prizes, selling food, selling wristbands / tickets, etc. This is a great chance for working parents to get involved. Food for Teachers - Would you be available to send food for PTA sponsored breakfasts and luncheons periodically throughout the year? Grandperson's Day - Be a greeter or a guide to help welcome and assist all our GRAND-persons. Helping Hands - Volunteers assist in wrapping collection boxes, organizing and wrapping donated items. This drive begins in late November and runs through mid December. It benefits families in our school. Landscaping - Help keep our flowerbeds beautiful by weeding and planting seasonal color. Great for weekend volunteers. Library - Help weekly or as your schedule allows in the media center shelving books, assisting children with selections, and other projects. Office Assistant - Donate time weekly or monthly to help with general office needs. Playground Monitors - Volunteers help supervise children during monthly PTA meetings and Open House in the evenings. Also there is an occasional need during the school day to relieve specials teachers for special events. Recycling - Assist with monthly collection and promotion. Spirit Days - This new activity will be coming soon! Most activities will take place during the day, once a month at lunchtime. Skating Party Volunteers - Volunteers help check in students for classroom participation and assist with chaperoning. Westwood sponsors a skating party once a month at Roller City. Story Time Readers - Read to children on a weekly or monthly basis. Super Kids' Day - Help supervise students in the spring for this favorite day of the year. Come during your child's scheduled event. Teacher Classroom Volunteer - Help teachers as needed in the classroom or on a weekly basis. Test Monitors - Monitors are needed for state mandated tests given in the spring. A monitor is needed for each classroom for 2-3 hour shifts in the morning and afternoon. A short training session is given by the counselor prior to the test dates. T-Shirts - Volunteers help sort and distribute school t-shirts mid September. Tutoring - Do you have time to spend with students helping them master a skill? Variety Show - Even though the PTA has a committee to plan and implement the Variety show, it takes many more 'workers' to get the job done. If you can man the concession stands, take tickets, or set up / tear down, work a spot light, this would be a great place to help. The Variety show will be January 29th. Vision Screening - This program is held in the fall. Volunteers are needed to assist in testing and supervising students to and from class throughout the day. Volunteer Room - Help teachers and staff by completing projects left in the volunteer room, cutting out letters, laminating, hole punching, etc. Volunteer Substitute - If you would like to donate you time in the classroom, you can be a volunteer substitute. A workshop is required and will be provided at the Education Service Center on October 15th at 1:30pm.
